After eating a sock one Saturday evening and vomiting it up the next morning Daisy was unsurprisingly feeling very out of sorts. She was quiet, lethargic and shaking. Daisy was admitted to Casey Pet Emergency for radiographs and supportive care. Radiographs raised suspicion of a further foreign body within the gastrointestinal tract, however the gas appeared to be moving through. Daisy went home to her family with pain relief and presented to the Narre Warren Vet for a revisit the following morning.
Daisy had not slept all night, was not eating or toileting and consuming only small amounts of water. Physical examination revealed marked abdominal pain. Daisy was admitted into hospital for further diagnostic testing. Blood testing indicated abnormal inflammatory markers, and an abdominal ultrasound also highlighted significant inflammation, fluid distension and evidence of a linear foreign body.
Daisy was prepped for surgery where she underwent an exploratory laparotomy (learn more here) whereby Dr. Susi discovered multiple hair ties, fabric and grass within the gastrointestinal tract. These objects were successfully removed, the area cleaned and flushed, and the surgical site was closed.
Daisy spent the night at Casey Pet Emergency for supportive care before returning to clinic the following morning for supportive care and repeat bloodwork and ultrasound. With Daisy’s condition improving, she was reunited with her family that evening. She was prescribed further pain relief, strict rest, a bland diet and lots of TLC!
Despite the subsequent development of an uncomfortable ear infection, we are please to report that Daisy is recovering well at home wither family.
