Bowie the 6 month old ruby Toy Cavoodle had his castration a few weeks ago and was such a trooper through it all – we just had to give him mention!  A day at the vet hospital can be overwhelming for most of our pets.  Strange smells, sounds, and often unfamiliar people, coupled with anxiety from their owners, it doesn’t always make for the most pleasant of days!  We make every effort to keep our patients comfortable, especially those that are very young, wanting to make every visit to the vet as stress free as possible.  That’s why we encourage you to bring along things like blankets and toys so that your pet can have familiar items with them when in our care.  We use stress free techniques and work with our patient’s individual personality to ensure that we are giving each of them exactly what they need.  Bowie was an absolute chilled superstar through the whole day, letting the team at Narre Warren do all the necessary things to get him through his desexing with minimal fuss.  What a little legend!

Here at The Narre Warren Vets, we recommend desexing from 16 weeks of age.  Though there is much literature as to when the correct time to desex your pet is, there are multiple irrefutable benefits for desexing early.  These include behavioural problems such as roaming, aggression, urine marking and prostate issues in males. In females, it prevents mating behaviour and false pregnancy, whilst also reducing the risk of mammary tumours and ovarian cancer, especially if desexed before their first heat.

Desexing is critically important to eliminate unwanted pregnancies and adding to the multitude of pets that are already in desperate need of adopting.  It is the responsibility of us, as pet owners to make sure that our pets are given the best chance of living longer and healthier lives.  Little Bowie can now rest assured that his owners have given him that chance.
