Planning to travel overseas with your pet?
Rabies vaccination may be an important part of your pet’s international travel requirements.
We can provide rabies vaccination and a DAFF (Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry) compliant rabies vaccination form for pets travelling internationally. However, do note that vaccination is only one part of the export process, and requirements vary between countries.
If your pet is travelling internationally, a rabies vaccination may be required by the destination country. The requirements can vary depending on where you are travelling, so it is important to check the specific requirements well in advance of your trip.
A rabies vaccination on its own does not necessarily mean your pet is immediately eligible to travel.
We recommend working with a specialist pet travel company to help you understand and organise the broader requirements for your destination.
At your appointment, our veterinarian will:
Accurate identification details are particularly important, so your pet’s microchip and travel documentation will be checked as part of the process.
Our role is limited to providing the rabies vaccination and DAFF certification. We do not organise your pet’s flights, permits or other export logistics.
Because every country has different entry requirements, we recommend contacting a specialist pet travel service to help you navigate the complete process.
International pet travel can involve multiple steps, and some requirements need to be completed within specific timeframes. We recommend starting the process well before your planned departure date.
Our rabies vaccine is specially ordered for each patient, so please call us to make arrangements.
No, routine rabies vaccination is not required for pets living in Australia. Australia does not have rabies in the same way that many other countries do.
However, Australia does have Australian Bat Lyssavirus (ABLV), which is carried by some bats. ABLV is a serious disease, but it is uncommon.
If you are concerned that your pet has been exposed to a bat or may have come into contact with ABLV, do not arrange a routine rabies vaccination. There is a separate process for suspected ABLV exposure, which is managed according to Australian regulatory requirements.
Please contact our team as soon as possible for guidance if you believe your pet may have been exposed to a bat.
If your pet is travelling internationally, contact our team to arrange a rabies vaccination appointment. Please have your pet’s travel details available so we can ensure the vaccination and certification process is completed correctly.
Important: It is your responsibility to ensure that your pet meets the requirements of the destination country. A current rabies vaccination does not guarantee that your pet is eligible to enter a particular country.
