Caring for your senior cat

Cats are masters at hiding illness. From around ten years of age, regular check-ups become even more important.

As cats get older, changes in their health can be gradual and easy to miss. Regular veterinary care can help identify these changes early and keep your cat comfortable as they age.

Senior Cat Health Checks

Senior cats benefit from regular check-ups where we can monitor:

  • Weight and body condition
  • Teeth and dental health
  • Heart and general health
  • Mobility and arthritis
  • Kidney and other organ health
  • Changes in appetite, thirst or behaviour

Blood and urine testing can also help identify health changes that may not be obvious at home.

Healthcare Plan

Our Pet Healthcare Plan can make ongoing preventative care easier to manage. It includes routine consultations, annual vaccinations and an annual wellness screen, including blood and urine testing. Members also receive additional discounts on selected procedures and treatments.

Ask our team whether the Healthcare Plan is suitable for your senior cat.

Common Senior Cat Conditions

Older cats can develop conditions that are not always obvious in the early stages. Changes in weight, appetite, thirst, behaviour or activity are worth discussing with your veterinarian.

Hyperthyroidism

Hyperthyroidism is a common condition in older cats. Narre Warren Vet offers Radioactive Iodine Treatment for cats diagnosed with hyperthyroidism and can discuss whether this treatment may be appropriate for your cat.

Arthritis & Mobility

Changes in jumping, walking, grooming or general activity can sometimes be associated with arthritis.

Read our Arthritis in Pets information to learn more about what to look for and how we can help.

Quality of Life

As pets get older, it can sometimes be difficult to know whether changes are simply part of ageing or whether they indicate a problem.

Our Quality of Life Resource can help you think about your cat’s comfort and wellbeing and provide a starting point for discussion with your vet.

Have you noticed a change in your cat? Give us a call. Our team can help you work out whether a senior health check is appropriate.
