Top 10 Puppy Training Tips

Puppies learn quickly, especially when training is positive, consistent and fun. Start early and keep things simple.

1. Start Early

Begin training as soon as your puppy comes home. Keep lessons short and positive.

2. Use Training Treats

Reward good behaviour with small training treats, praise or a favourite toy. You can also use some of your puppy’s daily food as treats.

3. Keep Training Short

A few minutes at a time is plenty. Finish while your puppy is still interested and having fun.

4. Be Consistent

Use the same words and expectations every time. Everyone in the household should follow the same rules.

5. Socialise Early

Introduce your puppy to different people, friendly dogs, places and everyday experiences in a positive way.

6. Desensitise Gradually

Help your puppy become comfortable with things they may encounter throughout life, such as car rides, grooming, handling, household noises and visits to the vet.

Start quietly and slowly increase the experience as your puppy becomes comfortable.

7. Reward the Behaviour You Want

When your puppy does something right, reward them straight away. This helps them understand what you want them to repeat.

8. Practise Basic Commands

Start with simple cues such as sit, come, stay and leave it. Practise in different places as your puppy improves.

9. Be Patient With Toilet Training

Take your puppy outside regularly, particularly after sleeping, eating and playing. Praise them when they get it right.

10. Make Training Part of Everyday Life

Training doesn’t have to be a formal session. Practise while feeding, walking, playing, grooming and settling your puppy.
