Protecting Your Pet from Parasites

Regular parasite prevention is an important part of keeping your dog or cat healthy. Parasites can cause illness and, in some cases, may also pose a risk to people.

At The Narre Warren Vet, we can help you choose a parasite prevention program based on your pet’s age, weight, lifestyle, health, travel and individual risk factors.

There isn’t one treatment that is right for every pet. Different products provide protection against different parasites, while some offer broader coverage in a single treatment.

Dogs can be exposed to parasites through everyday activities such as walking outdoors, contact with other animals, hunting, scavenging and eating raw meat or animal tissue.

Depending on your dog’s lifestyle, parasite prevention may need to provide protection against:

  • Fleas
  • Ticks
  • Intestinal worms
  • Tapeworm
  • Heartworm

NexGard Spectra for Dogs

We offer NexGard Spectra for dogs, providing broad parasite protection in a convenient treatment.

NexGard Spectra provides protection against fleas, ticks, heartworm and several intestinal worms, with coverage determined by the specific product and its approved Australian label.

Your veterinarian can advise whether NexGard Spectra is appropriate for your dog and how often it should be given.

Free Tapeworm Protection

When you purchase 3 or 6 months of NexGard Spectra coverage, we provide tapeworm protection free of charge.

This is a convenient way to help keep your dog’s parasite prevention up to date while providing additional protection against tapeworm.

Speak with our team for current offer details and to make sure your dog receives the appropriate tapeworm treatment for their individual needs.

ProHeart Heartworm Prevention

We also offer ProHeart injections for long-lasting heartworm prevention in dogs.

ProHeart provides an alternative to regular oral or topical heartworm prevention, with the injection administered by our veterinary team.

Your veterinarian can discuss whether ProHeart is suitable for your dog and explain the recommended treatment schedule based on their age, weight and individual circumstances.

Tapeworm Protection

Tapeworm is an important consideration for dogs that hunt, scavenge, eat raw meat or animal offal, or have exposure to fleas.

Flea control can help reduce the risk of flea-associated tapeworm, but controlling fleas is not the same as treating an established tapeworm infection.

If you notice small, rice-like segments around your dog’s anus, in their bedding or in their faeces, contact our veterinary team. Your dog may require a specific tapeworm treatment.

Cats can also be exposed to parasites, even if they spend most of their time indoors.

Your cat’s parasite prevention needs may depend on whether they go outdoors, hunt, interact with other animals, or live in an area where particular parasites are more common.

Depending on their individual risk, protection may be recommended against:

  • Fleas
  • Intestinal worms
  • Tapeworm
  • Heartworm
  • Other relevant parasites

NexGard Spectra for Cats

We offer NexGard Spectra for cats, providing broad parasite protection in a convenient treatment.

NexGard Spectra for cats provides protection against parasites covered by the product’s approved Australian label. Your veterinarian can advise whether it is suitable for your cat and how often it should be used.

Intestinal Worms and Tapeworm

Cats can develop intestinal worms through exposure to contaminated environments, other animals, prey and fleas.

Tapeworm risk can be higher in cats that hunt or catch prey, eat raw animal tissue or have flea exposure.

Milpro contains active ingredients that provide treatment against certain intestinal worms and tapeworms. The appropriate product and dose depend on your cat’s weight, age and individual circumstances.

Choosing the Right Parasite Prevention

The best parasite prevention program is one that matches your pet’s lifestyle and individual risk.

When recommending a treatment, our veterinary team may consider:

  • Age and weight
  • Indoor or outdoor lifestyle
  • Contact with other animals
  • Flea and tick exposure
  • Hunting or scavenging
  • Diet, including raw meat
  • Travel
  • Local parasite risks
  • Previous parasite treatments
  • Other medications or health conditions

This helps us determine which parasites your pet needs protection against and which treatment is most appropriate.

Don’t Double Up Treatments

Some parasite prevention products contain similar or overlapping active ingredients.

Using multiple products together without veterinary advice may result in unnecessary treatment or inappropriate dosing.

Before combining NexGard Spectra, ProHeart, Milpro or other parasite treatments, speak with our veterinary team.

Always use parasite treatments according to the current Australian approved label or the directions provided by your veterinarian.

What If I See Worms?

If you notice worms or small, rice-like segments in your pet’s faeces, around their anus or on their bedding, contact The Narre Warren Vet.

If possible, take a photograph or bring a sample with you. Different parasites require different treatments, so identifying the likely parasite can help us recommend the appropriate treatment.

Parasite Prevention for Puppies and Kittens

Young pets have different parasite prevention needs as they grow.

Puppies and kittens require treatments that are appropriate for their age and weight, with their prevention program adjusted as they develop.

Our veterinary team can help you establish a practical parasite prevention plan from your pet’s first visit and update it as their needs change.

Keep Your Pet Protected

Parasite prevention doesn’t have to be complicated. The right approach depends on your individual pet and the parasites they are most likely to encounter. Our veterinary team can help you choose an appropriate parasite prevention program.
