Dear old Wilco has had an extensive history at our Narre Warren clinic and he is now well into his twilight years.  He truly is one tough cookie and has been through more than enough in one doggie lifetime.

Wilco, a 15-year-old Schnauzer, has been a beloved member of his family ever since he was adopted from the RSPCA at 14 months of age.  Over the years, Wilco has faced numerous health challenges, battling long-term skin allergies whilst also being diagnosed with hypothyroidism almost a decade ago. Despite enduring multiple surgeries, constant medications, and the effects of ageing, Wilco’s unwavering spirit and the love of his caring family have remained steadfast.  All these experiences have required multiple visits to our Narre Warren clinic and speciality hospitals over the years.

In 2021 during an ultrasound, a mass was discovered on Wilco’s gall bladder. Wilco underwent a complete resection of his gall bladder with a cholecystectomy at Southpaws specialty hospital, which left him on a long road to recovery.

As Wilco entered his senior years, the toll of his multiple medical conditions began to manifest more prominently. Severe arthritis caused him to slow down, while ongoing skin and allergy issues added to his discomfort. Though he had been on Zydax injections for his arthritis for an extended period, it became clear that additional measures were needed to alleviate his pain and improve his quality of life of late.

In their pursuit of ensuring Wilco’s comfort in his final moments, his family and the vets at Narre Warren explored alternative treatment options. They made the decision to introduce Beransa injections into Wilco’s treatment plan, and the results so far have been remarkable.  Beransa is a new treatment for arthritis in dogs and works by neutralizing the nerve growth factor (NGF), which has been shown to be involved in the perception of pain.  Wilco’s owners noticed a significant improvement in his condition, as his mobility increased and his pain became more manageable. This newfound relief brought renewed hope and comfort to both Wilco and his family.

After years of extensive medical treatment, Wilco’s family is facing a difficult decision on the horizon. Recognizing that his journey is nearing its end, they have made the heartfelt choice to reduce his medications to only those essential for his comfort. This decision is a testament to their unwavering love and commitment to providing Wilco with the best possible care during his final chapter.

Wilco’s story is one of resilience, strength, and unwavering love. Throughout his life, he has shown remarkable courage in the face of adversity, overcoming and also living with numerous health challenges with the support of his devoted family. We are positive they will cherish the precious moments they have left together, holding on to the memories of a loyal and loving companion who has touched their lives in immeasurable ways, knowing that they did absolutely everything for their loved one, Wilco the Brave.
